John Farrell is running for the Newark Board of Education to bring fresh leadership, energy, and accountability to our schools. He believes every Newark student deserves a safe, supportive classroom, qualified teachers, and resources that actually reach the children they’re meant to serve. John is stepping up to make sure community voices are heard, tax dollars are used wisely, and every decision puts Newark students first.

John Farrell's story is a testament to resilience, growth, and a passion for learning. Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, John attended several schools in the area, including Miller Street in Newark, Madison Avenue, and Myrtle Avenue in Irvington. He graduated from Irvington High School in 1998. His academic journey continued at Caldwell College, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Communications Arts and World History. This education laid the foundation for his lifelong pursuit of knowledge.

John earned elementary (K-6) and history (K-12) certifications to inspire students at all levels. Before teaching, he worked as a UPS package handler at Newark Airport and in security services, meeting many people and gaining perspectives that enrich his classroom approach.

John's passion for teaching ignited when he began working in Newark Public Schools and city charter schools. He has held many roles, including substitute teacher, teacher's assistant, cross-country coach, athletic director, and U.S. History teacher. For over thirteen years, John has shaped young minds at Philip's Academy Charter School in Newark. His deep knowledge of history and dedication to student success continue to make a lasting impact.

John's commitment to education is rooted in his belief that history empowers. Guided by the motto, "Knowing your history is the best weapon against oppression," he motivates students to understand their place in the world and to grow through challenge and inspiration.

At the core of John's values is the influence of his grandmother, who taught him the importance of hard work and serving others. She worked in social services, shaping young minds, and dedicated her life to helping others, retiring in her late 70s. John credits her as a model of service, perseverance, and faith, lessons that continue to inspire his approach to life and teaching.

NJ.COM:
City to Spend $500 million to lease building

Another candidate, John Farrell, took issue with the cost and what he felt was the district’s failure to adequately publicize it.

“I can appreciate the district wanting to build new facilities to alleviate class sizes, but the price tag seems unbelievable,” said Farrell. “Two of my key messages are transparent governance and resource allocation. It seems to me these two issues are at the forefront when it comes to the new building.”
